While reveling in the return of Doctor Martha Jones and all the things we love about her, we also recognize a solid story that works completely outside of the science fiction construct. Noting that the writer for this Season 2 story has never written for Torchwood, Doctor Who, or virtually any science fiction in total, we discuss the fact that if you were to peel away some of the (thoroughly enjoyable) elements of the episode — Martha, the Torchwood team working really effectively for a change, alien parasites, alien parasites exploited for ill gain — you could still have a compelling crime story.
