Season 17 had its peaks and valleys, and it’s rather unfortunate that the final story to Douglas Adams’ tenure as story editor (as well as a number of other ‘final moments’) was squarely in the middle of the plains.
With the team now working more effectively and completely than any time in Season 1, we’re handed a rather overt, at times obvious investigation into a crime that could have led to more, but didn’t.
With an unusual foray into an intergalactic crime drama rather than a space mystery, Season 17’s fourth story installment leaves us a little unimpressed.
Season 2 of Torchwood crashes in like a left hook, and even the return of fearless leader Jack can’t fully contain the shockwave that is Time Agent John Hart.
Our tin dog sounds a little off as we land on the jungle planet of Chloris in this Fourth and Romana story, but that’s not the only thing that feels odd.

With a bottle of wine, a chicken egg, a clenched fist, and a famous painting of a nonplussed Italian noblewoman, we head to Paris for what is undoubtedly our favorite classic era story. From the ‘we can’t believe it was written this quickly’ backstory, to the snappy and smart Douglas Adams dialogue, to the over-the-top but still delightful performances, we agree that the only thing we’d want to change about it is the duration. We’d want more.
The Cardiff Rift gets uppity, courtesy of a mysterious cravat-sporting caretaker with a penchant for Polaroids and time-tinkering, taking Jack and Tosh to 1941 and a very awkward military meet-up.
With equal parts psychopathy and sarcasm, we drill into Season 17 with Terry Nation’s final story contribution to Doctor Who, and the full-time arrival of Lalla Ward as Romana.
